At Crown Building & Construction, we’ve been building quality family homes in North-Eastern Victoria for years. Our goal isn’t to just craft beautiful homes, but to create spaces that match the lifestyle of the people and families who live in them for years to come.
While trends come and go, we’ve seen one design element that people look for in a home time and time again: space.
Maximising the space in your home doesn’t just mean your belongings have a place to go. It’s so much more than that. A spacious home is relaxing, easy to clean and tidy, and feels elevated even after the morning rush.
Given all of this, it’s hardly surprising that so many of our clients are seeking homes with maximised space!
Here are our four tips to create an open, spacious feel in your new home.
An optimised floorplan
A spacious home begins with a strong floorplan. One that considers your home’s external environment, like the orientation of your property, where the sunlight travels, and what elements surrounding your home are worth admiring through a window.
Windows and doors should be placed in such a way as to maximise the amount of sun that filters into your home, while capturing trees and vegetation that amplify the views from your windows.
Once the positioning of your windows and external access points have been decided, your floorplan should then consider your personal needs and lifestyle choices. These factors can impact the size and placement of rooms, walk-in wardrobes, ensuites and leisure spaces.
For the best results, your floorplan should feature an open living, kitchen and dining area. These large open areas can increase the flow and spaciousness of a home, even in smaller dwellings.
Natural lighting
As previously mentioned, natural lighting plays a key part in maximising the space of your home. Large windows are a big yes when creating a feeling of spaciousness, and glass sliding doors can even add meters to your living space when opened towards an outdoor area.
We understand, however, that for certain blocks, natural lighting just isn’t that strong. Perhaps neighbouring landmarks or buildings block direct sunlight. In these cases, we recommend installing skylights.
Skylights can elevate kitchens, dark hallways, windowless rooms, and even walk-in wardrobes. The additional light not only adds ambiance to your rooms, but also increases the feeling of openness.
Interior Design
How you choose to decorate your home can significantly impact how spacious it feels. While darker colours tend to sinch spaces in, warmer, brighter and lighter tones tend to have the opposite effect.
And no, beige isn’t your only option! There is an abundance of warm, light tones that can still add character and life to your rooms without feeling impersonal.
Additionally, design elements like mirrors, wallpapers and architectural features such as picture frame mouldings can also increase the spaciousness of your home.
Hidden storage solutions
The afternoon sun and neutral wall paint can only do so much if you’re struggling to store your personal belongings. That’s why it pays to consider how you’ll actually use your home before your builder picks up their tools. Built-in closets, wall-to-wall shelving and personalised ensuites can all elevate the feel of your home while helping maintain a clutter-free space.
Raised ceilings
Lastly, raised ceilings do wonders to elevate your home and create a sense of spaciousness. An underrated design feature, raised ceilings aren’t just for show, they also increase the airflow of your home. It’s a subtle and sophisticated way to maximise the space, especially in smaller dwellings like units and town houses.
